48 HHQ-9 Long Range Air Defence Missiles are carried in Eight 6-cell vertical launch systems (VLS) by Type 052C Destroyer

The HaiHongQi 9 (HHQ-9) is naval version of the HongQi 9 (HQ-9) long-range surface to air missile system which can be used against targets flying both at low and high altitude. It is developed by the China Academy of Defense Technology.


HHQ-9 is designed to counter new generation aircraft, stealth cruise missiles, subsonic and supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles and short ballistic missiles.

    First Lanzhou (170) was laid down in late 2002, launched in 2003 and commissioned in 2004.

    Second Haikou (171) was launched in 2003 and entered service in 2005.

    Two additional ships this class under construction after the lengthy testing process was completed and PLAN was satisfied with the design with few miner changes.

    All ship use four Chinese active phased array (AESA)radar covering all four sides

    These radar guide the 48 HHQ-9 long-range air defence missiles from eight 6-cell vertical launch system (VLS).

    HHQ-9 uses individual VLS which is inlike the Russian ‘revolver’ VLS design for S300

    Missile is cold-launched vertically and once it clears the VLS like Russian S-300 and rocket motor ignition is done after that

    Because of its concept similarity to the US AEGIS air defence system, this is often call Red US AEGIS.
